For the past seven years, Variety has honored the top songs of the year and the Hitmakers behind them, with a special issue of the magazine and accompanying online rollout, and a celebration taking place in Los Angeles. If people are clicking on goose farts, the majors will sign the goose and put out its record. Whereas major labels used to hunt for talent, and then nurture it, mostly in a hands-off manner. Today? They'll ask you to do a cover, to employ another songwriter, to remix. The opportunity cost is so high that they want insurance, but this is the opposite of the essence of music. This is not collaborative art like movies or TV, music is about pure inspiration, resulting in a creation that almost no one can define, can quantify, but that resonates with the public.So the majors, if they want to survive in the new music world, need to sign more acts in more genres, and should stop laying off workers to satiate Wall Street. Album Punctuation Showdown: “Warning:” vs “CSI:Ambleside” Warning: = From snotty pop punk to political stadium rock, Green Day have mastered many things in their career. But what about punctuation? Well, there is at least one punctuation aberration in their back catalogue. And that comes in the shape of 2000’s “Warning”. What’s the problem there, you ask? It’s true that this album is often just called “Warning”, with no punctuation. However, if you look at the album cover itself, you’ll notice that it’s presented with a colon after “Warning”. But also with nothing after the colon. And there lies the issue. A colon is a mark of anticipation. It’s used to introduce something, such as an additional detail or clarification after a full sentence. Or it could be a subtitle after a title, as is sometimes the case in album names. So, what happened here? Was a subtitle dropped? Did the album cover initially have the band name after the album title, making it “Warning: Green Day”, but then got rearranged? Or are we being invited to imagine that the content of the album itself serves as a kind of subtitle or extra detail? It’s at best confusing. And once you notice the colon on the cover, lurking sheepishly in the bottom corner with nothing to do, it looks pretty stupid. 0/10: Possibly the most incorrect use of this punctuation imaginable.CSI:Ambleside = Half Man Half Biscuit (HMHB for short) might not have scaled the same heady heights of the music industry as Green Day. But they are a beloved cult act. And there’s always the chance they’re better at punctuation than Billy Joe Armstrong et al., right? Let’s take a look.For our purposes, the key record is the colon-containing “CSI:Ambleside”.The name is a play on the popular “CSI” franchise of TV shows, most of which feature the “CSI” abbreviation, followed by a location. And while the show might focus on glamorous locales such as Miami and Las Vegas, HMHB, in keeping with their parochial outlook, opt for the Cumbrian town of Ambleside.By mere dint of having something – anything – after the colon, HMHB permit it to do what colons are meant to do: i.e., it expands on the main “CSI” title by specifying that this is the Ambleside edition.It is technically incorrect not to have a space between the colon and “Ambleside” (an error that “CSI: Vegas”, “CSI: Miami”, etc., happily avoid). But I think we can chalk this up to an aesthetic choice for the album cover rather than punctuation-based ignorance.So, yes, Green Day might have multiple top-ten hits under their belts, outshining HMHB’s highest UK chart position of 56 in 2010 for “Joy Division Oven Gloves”. But where it really matters, HMHB are the superior band. And where it really matters is in the application of punctuation.7/10: Spacing aside, we have a clear winner in the colon showdown.

It's worth noting that "I Told Them" is the 7th studio album by the talented Nigerian 🇳🇬 artist Burna Boy, which was released on August 25, 2023. This album featured artists such as 21 Savage, Dave, Seyi Vibez, J. Cole, GZA and RZA from the iconic Wu-Tang Clan, and the talented Byron Messia.Prior to the album's release, 4 singles were strategically launched: "Sittin' on Top of the World," "Talibans II," "Big 7," and "Cheat on Me." Future is one of the most iconic music personas ever built, and probably one of the most misunderstood.You've seen the jokes, and probably made some of them. "Mumble rapper", "toxic king", "lean-infused voice", "has a ton of baby mamas", etcetera. But beyond the occasional spicy report, how much do we really know about Future?The fans that have stuck with Future have been rewarded immensely with a constantly evolving journey.He's reinvented his own sound repeatedly within the trap genre that he revolutionized, partly aided by his disgustingly prolific output. When an album didn't work out, he'd re-caliber and release something better 12 months later, OR remind fans of his "earlier, more raw music", or both! And his range was immaculate. He could go from club banger, to toxic ballad, to sex fiend song, to regretful croons, to some good old braggadocio.At one point, he explicitly used he alias "Hendrix", likening himself to the brash, legendary rockstar. But it would be a mistake to say that he sold a lifestyle to his fans. It's evident from his lyrics that this is a life he was born into, and it's really hard to escape. And, going by YouTube comments, his fans don't feel inspired by it - they feel seen. The memes around Future add to it - from the time he did an entire interview while high on lean ("sensational"), to the "Future texting his ex" photo followed by a copypasta ("X world event reminded me that I did you wrong"). Future has also managed to stay relevant because of his openness to genres. While he's certainly stuck largely to being in the hip-hop lane, some of his collabs include Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and Maroon 5. His work shines best when he's working with other R&B artists like The Weeknd. And, yes, nobody in the world trusts Drake anymore, but Future's biggest hits - including his first Billboard #1- comes with a Drake collaboration.Lastly, one important reason for his success is the man who made many of his biggest, most popular beats. "Jumpman", "Mask Off", "Where Ya At", some of his biggest songs were produced by Metro Boomin. Both of them went on a historic run in the last 12 months with 2 joint albums that call back Metro's iconic producer tag that Future provided: "if young Metro don't trust you, I'm gon' shoot you". Future has always been great with choosing his producers, and he lands them immense respect. But his relationship with Metro is special, and made unlikely superstars out of both of them.Sensational.

I’m a fan of Billy Corgan (as an artist, a person, and as a thinker), as well as The Smashing Pumpkins; their shows I’ve seen live are GREAT and I really enjoy their music.That said, this article is a good read, even if you’re not a big fan of the band, as Corgan makes some great points about (essentially) having a Growth Mindset and not fixating on what made you, as that inevitably leads to stagnation and in the case of music (and in my industry of ever-changing tech) irrelevance.#growthmindset #selfimprovement https://lnkd.in/e2eimMar
