(UPI) Federal and state officials Monday said they have no evidence that the Chesapeake Bay has been infiltrated by the -pesticide Kepone, saying the problem is confined to the James River in Virginia. According to Mary Jo Gar-reis, Maryland Health Department official. no samples are being taken from the Chesapeake because "We have no reason to check Maryland shellfish water for the compound, because the Kepone problem is localized in the James River." Kepone is a toxic chemical which caused the hospitalization of 28 workers in Hopewell, where it was produced. Kepone pollution of the James River resulted from waste dumping by the Life Science Products Company in Hopewell. 'The plant closed July 24 after several employes were stricken by the chemical, which is used commercially as a roach and fire ant poison.

Garreis said the "presence of Kepone in the James River in no way endangers Maryland water." adding that Kepone pollution "is confined to the James River watershed." Virgina Gov. Mills E. Godwin Jr. has banned all fishing in the lower portion of the James River from Richmond to the Chesapeake Bay while authorities search for evidence of the poison. Original reports said Maryland authorities were analyzing oyster samples from the Chesapeake for traces of Kepone.
