Hill trailer Court at Bassett. Absenteeism remained high in the coal fields of Southwest Virginia today; but most mines were open as emergency supplies of gasoline poured into the area. Fred Wilson, secretary-treasurer of UMW District 28 at Norton, said only three mines were reported to be closed today, miners unable to get gasoline to get to work. "We've still got gas problems," Wilson said. "A lot of mines do still have a number of men absent, But it's looking a whole lot better." He said he had no estimate on the number of men absent from the mines today, but that it appeared about 30 per remained cent of offthe area's miners the -job.

Absenteeism had run as high as 50 per cent earlier in the week when an estimated 3,000 miners were' unable: to get enough fuel to drive to work. A number of mines in the southwest were closed Tuesday and Wednesday. The three mines" remaining closed today, Wilson said, employe about 450 men, Wilson said an additional half million gallons of emergency fuel was expected to arrive in. the gasoline-starved southwest coal counties on Friday and he' voiced hopes that most mines would be operating normally by the first of next week. 4 But he said there were some reports of unhappiness among service station owners who were complaining because emergency allocations of fuel were going directly to mining companies.

Wilson said many of the mining companies that received as much as 50,000 gallons of emergency gasoline were selling it directly to their employes.
