Although we homeschool year round, in the summer months I always think about new homeschool room ideas to see if we can improve our setup. We currently have a desk in our son’s bedroom and utilize the kitchen table!
There is absolutely no requirement to have an office if you home educate as this can be done just as well from a dining room table or a small desk in the bedroom.
If you have a spare room in the house for homeschooling then perfect, but most of us don’t. So I have listed different spaces below that are amazing homeschool room ideas for any home.

Get the kids involved in choosing where to study
The one thing we have learned in our years of homeschooling is to get the kids involved!
When we first started the space he used for homeschool looked like a homeschool classroom. Although it looked cute and colorful it was completely impractical and actually made him think he was in public school.
This was ok when he was younger, but now he is 11 and has been homeschooled for a number of years he wants “full” control of his homeschool space. As to be fair he is the one who will be in it.
So we have a desk in his bedroom, where he does all of his online classes and any online curriculum, like Generation Genius. He has a computer, two screens (as he likes to game as well!!), a gaming chair, pen holders, and some stacking shelves.
We have put a bookshelf in his closet with all of the best homeschooling resources in it. He has another bookshelf in his bedroom with his reading books on, check out the best books for kids.
Homeschool Set Up Ideas
Now as I have already said, you don’t need to have a homeschool room at all.
Over the years, I’ve seen firsthand just how challenging it can be to set up a homeschooling environment that works for both parents and children.
But fear not!
There are plenty of creative ways to make your homeschooling experience a success.

Homeschool Bedroom
Hey, if you’re considering homeschooling, turning your child’s bedroom into a dedicated learning space is a pretty practical option! In this setup, you can set up a desk and bookshelf, and voila! A learning environment is created.
For those of us who prefer some privacy and a quieter environment, homeschooling in the bedroom can be especially appealing. It’s super convenient having a designated learning space within your child’s bedroom that can help reduce distractions and provide a comfortable space for learning.
We have used this option on and off for years, we put in a desk and transformed my son’s closet into a bookshelf.
We have a bookshelf in his actual room, but his homeschool curriculum lives in his closet!
Homeschooling in the Garage
If you’re struggling to find space in your home for a dedicated homeschooling area, the garage can be a great solution. With a little bit of creativity and some elbow grease, you can transform your garage into a comfortable learning space for your kids.
First, clear out all the clutter and unused items from your garage. This can be a great opportunity to declutter and get rid of things you no longer need. Next, add some insulation and drywall to the walls and ceiling to make the space more comfortable and soundproof.
You can then create a dedicated learning area by adding desks, chairs, and storage units. Make sure to have plenty of natural light and good ventilation in the space. You can even add some rugs and decor to make it feel more homey and inviting.
Don’t forget to add some fun and engaging elements to the space to keep your kids motivated and interested in their studies. This can include a chalkboard or whiteboard, educational posters, and learning games and toys.

Under Stair Cupboard

Make sure to keep the space organized and tidy to create a productive learning environment. Encourage your children to clean up after themselves and put away their supplies when they’re finished with them.
You will still have to do the laundry. Or better yet teach the kids how to do it for you!
Homeschooling in the Kitchen
Although we have a dedicated homeschool room, we spend so much time in the kitchen, we could easily turn this into an office.
If you have a dresser or a spare kitchen shelf, why not fill it with school supplies instead?
In fact, all we do is when he is working with his workbooks, he comes and sits at the kitchen table.
Homeschool Office
If you are lucky enough to have a home office, why not consider adding a table and chair for your homeschooler?
The room is already set up as an office, so it could be perfect. I would only suggest this though for older kids!

Homeschool Bedroom Ideas
Looking to set up a homeschool space for your kids in their bedroom? Here are some ideas and items that I’ve found helpful in creating a comfortable and productive learning environment:
- Gaming Chair: If your child enjoys gaming or spends long hours sitting at their desk, a gaming chair can provide extra comfort and support. My son got this one for Christmas, so it was a win-win. In fact, a lot of our homeschool room supplies were either birthday or Christmas gifts.
- Gaming table: A gaming table can provide additional storage and workspace. Look for one with built-in cup holders and cable management to keep things organized.
- Gaming Keyboard: This is so awesome as it lights up, in fact, it was so awesome I got one for myself too!
- Gaming Mouse and a large gaming mouse pad: This gaming mouse is really colorful and a great way to encourage kids to spend time on the computer.
- White Board: This I would say is a must, well certainly for us. We use it to plan what topics we are going to cover in the week. We have also started using it to show what we might be doing in the day. It is a great visual reminder of what we have planned.
- Pen Holders: Keep pens, pencils, and other writing utensils organized and within reach with a pen holder or desk organizer.
- Bookshelf: If you don’t have too much space left in their bedroom I highly recommend this ladder shelf. We have it in white and as it has different size shelves its great for both reading books and folders.
- Bedroom lighting: Good lighting is important for studying and reading of course, but you want the room to be a special place for them to work. This projector light, although not entirely practical has made a huge difference in our homeschool.
- Map of the world: We absolutely love to travel, so this was a must have item.
- Bean bag: If you have any room left I highly recommend a bean bag so they can comfortably sit and read their books.
By incorporating these items into your child’s bedroom, you can create a comfortable and productive homeschool space that meets their unique needs and learning style.
